Chapter Seventeen

Neph

We enter the cafe and stop short. A stack of chairs, mugs, blenders and spoons block the doorway. They are not talking or moving.

“Where did all this come from?” I ask Bas.

“Julian, Amber, Sapphire, and Bob found them and moved the spirits on. They drove them over a few minutes ago.”

“They were inside the cafe?” I feel a wave of panic. “Did they see the mess? And all the possessed objects? And the mess? And—” The word mess continues to echo through my head as I shift into a pony and start running in a circle.

“Neph,” Bas says softly, and I come to a halt. His warm, steady hands touch my neck, sending a shiver through me. “Amber and Julian weren’t upset, Nephy. They’re not revoking the franchise.”

I sigh and shift to human—with Bas’s hands still on my neck. My pulse races and I stare into his brown eyes. My lips part and I start to lean toward him, then Rob’s phone beeps.

I startle and step away from Bas.

Rob pulls his phone out of his pocket and turns off the beeping.

“It’s 5pm.” He flips up his eyepatch and drops his Spanish accent. “Let’s go Exorcist on these objects! I assume. I never actually saw the movie, because it looks scary. We’ll be less scary exorcist types and save this cafe. Get ready, spirits, because it’s Rob time!”

“What the hackamore?” I gape at Rob. “Was your role rewritten again?”

“I only work from 9 to 5,” Rob says happily. “Right now, I’m off the clock.”

“I don’t think that’s how method acting works,” Bas says. “You’re supposed to stay in character all the time.”

“All the time when I’m at work, yes,” Rob says. His gaze slides past me to the cafe door. “Hello, kitty!”

I spin to see Mocha sitting on the doorstep. “You’re back!” I hurry over to open the door and let him in. The cat struts in and slowly looks around the cafe.

Rob waves to Mocha. “I’m Rob. We met earlier.”

Mocha rubs against his leg and heads toward his cat tree. He shakes his butt the way cats do when they’re about to jump, and the tree shrieks. Then it races across the cafe with Mocha in hot pursuit.

“Get back here, kitty. Don’t hurt that poor tree,” Rob shouts, taking off after them.

For several minutes, Bas, Cham, and I watch them race around the cafe. I look at Cham. For once he isn’t holding his head, trembling, or freaking out. I give his hand a quick squeeze.

“Magic,” I whisper.

He smiles at me. “Magic.”

We cheer when a chair, two tables, and a spoon join the fray and manage to separate cat and tree. A triumphant Rob scoops up Mocha and cuddles him against his chest, and Bas and Cham share a grin. But my face falls. Because everything that just happened is just a reminder that we have dozens of possessed objects in the cafe.

“We’re never going to get things back to normal before the health inspector gets here,” I groan.

“Yes, we will,” Rob says as he cuddles Mocha against his chest.
